Miri to host state level Special Olympics meet

MIRI: Special Olympics Sarawak, Miri Chapter will be organising the state-level Special Olympics meet from Nov 1 to 3 and is need of public’s help to raise funds towards the coming event.

The chapter’s chairperson, Liza Chai said it need at least RM50,000 to host the event and is calling on caring members of the public to support its ‘Sunset Walkathon’ fundraising project.

“We badly needed this money for this event as we don’t want to face similar financial problem when we send our floor hockey team in Pyeong Chang Korea in 2013,” she said while calling on the corporate sector to lend a helping hand.

“Help us with the Sunset Walkathon because for the state-level Olympics, there will be 250 athletes from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Sri Aman are coming here to compete,” Liza said at a joint press conference yesterday.

Liza who is the walkathon’s treasurer said apart from expenses for the athletes, they needed funds for coaches and medical personnel for the Healthy Athletes Programme.

Among those present press conference were the walkathon organising committee members including Joselyn Hee (chairlady), Shirley Ariffin and Lian Pasan, the communications manager of the Miri Marriot Resort and Spa the co-organiser of the Sunset Walkathon.

Meanwhile, Hee announced the Sunset Walkathon will be held on Sept 29 starting and ending at the MMRS’ football field where it will be divided into two categories 5km and 10km.

“We encourage especially families to come for this charity walk. Families can join in the 5km categories while adults can go for the 10km. We start at 4pm,” said Hee.

Lian on the other hand assured of the resort’s continuous support towards Special Olympics and said that the management of the hotel had agreed to have the Sunset Walkathon as an annual fundraising event.

“In principal, our management has agreed to make the event annually…for the September walkathon, the top collector will get a two day one night stay at our Deluxe Garden Room with breakfast for two,” Lian enthused.

Meanwhile, further details and donation cards for the Sept 29 Sunset Walkathon are available from the hotel during office hours and those interested can also get them from Sunflower Centre from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.
