KUCHING: It was a sea of Jalur Gemilang (national flags) as hundreds thronged the Kuching Waterfront to participate in the state-level nationwide flag-raising campaign in conjunction with the National Day on

Aug 31.

With this year’s theme ‘Malaysiaku Berdaulat Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku’, the campaign was simultaneously launched across the country on Friday night with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak launching the national level campaign in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

“This campaign is to strengthen the patriotic spirit and unity among every Malaysian besides acting as a reminder on the importance of defending the country’s sovereignty,” said Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan who officiated at the state-level campaign.

Mawan also said every Malaysian must appreciate and honour the sacrifices made by past leaders who fought for the country to gain independence.

“The hardships that they (past leaders) went through are translated to the freedom, peace and harmony which we have today,” said Mawan.

He also said that since the forming of the Malaysian Federation, the country had rapidly built its momentum to reach world class standards physical and economic developments.

“Each citizen must also play his role to further develop the country. The choices made today will ascertain the nation’s future,” added Mawan.

Meanwhile, the Jalur Gemilang was raised at the Kuching Waterfront by the Malaysian navy in full pomp and ceremony followed by the presentation of the flag to representatives of several government departments, government linked companies and community leaders.

State Secretary Tan Sri Morshidi Ghani was on hand to receive the Jalur Gemilang on behalf of the state government from Mawan.

After the ceremony, Mawan flagged off some 300 motorcycle riders and cyclists who participated in the Jalur Gemilang convoy made up of 50 members from different clubs, the number representing the 50th year anniversary of Sarawak’s independence.
