KUCHING: Sarawak Regatta 2013 organisers are giving interested parties another two extra days to decide, extending the closing date for entries to Aug 22.

In a statement issued yesterday, organisers said that there might be some parties out there who are not aware that the closing date is looming quickly.

The regatta will be held from Sept 6 to 8 at the Kuching Waterfront.

This year, the King of the River (Raja Sungai) will take home a cool RM10,000 as the grand prize.

Held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Sarawak Independence within Malaysia, the theme for this regatta is ‘The Race for Harmony’.

This year, the regatta will be more special as it will feature the International Dragon Boat Exhibition Race for the first time in Sarawak. Five teams from five countries – Brunei, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Singapore – have been invited for the showpiece.

Three local Malaysian teams from Sandakan, Putrajaya and Penang will also be part of it.

Each dragon boat team is comprised of 18 paddlers, one drummer and one coxswain (steerer) and four reserves.

Besides that, a host of other interesting events have been included in the three-day programme such as Food and Culture Carnival, One District One Industry Product, handicraft promotion, exhibition from other states in the country and other forms of entertainment. Other attractions include the traditional Gendang Contest, Brooke Swim, Duck Catching, Golden Voice Contest and Golf Regatta.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has been invited to officiate at the three events – the Sarawak Regatta, Food and Culture Carnival, and the Handicraft Promotion on Sept 7.

Meanwhile, Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin will grace the closing ceremony the following day

(Sept 8).
