KUCHING: A policeman avoided being charged with soliciting for a RM50 bribe from a college student after the prosecution withdrew their appeal in the High Court against his discharge and acquittal.

Madzlan Jameo was initially released by a Session Court on Jan 30, 2012 as the prosecution failed to cast reasonable doubt on the case.

The policemen from Matang was accused of soliciting for the bribe from the 22-year-old college student as an inducement not to take action against the latter in a traffic case on April 18, 2009.

The student reported his ordeal to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The student had on April 18, 2009 beaten the red light near Kuching International Airport when caught by Madzlan and two other police officers.

The student was said to have given Madzlan RM10 not to issue a summons and agreed to give him another RM50 after two days.

They allegedly met again at Jalan Song but this time, the student brought a recorder. Madzlan was said to have assured the student not to worry about his summons when officers from the MACC arrested him.

He was charged under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 of the Penal Code.
