LAWAS: A Merdeka convoy comprising 10 vehicles and 22 motorcycles left Kampung Luagan in Sundar here for Kuching yesterday.

Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Sundar SAO Ladin Atok and Kampug Luagan 1Malaysia Community chairman councillor Semie Nasip flagged off the event which was organised by PBB Bukit SariYouth, Kommuniti 1Malaysia Kampung Luagan, and the Information Department.

The convoy is scheduled to arrive at the Golden Jubilee Town Square in Limbang today, and reach Kuching on August 31 for the Hari Merdeka celebration.

In his speech, Sum said the Barisan Nasional had upheld harmony and peace since day one to ensure the country continued to progress.

“The nation’s leaders, right from the Alliance era, had succeeded in bringing about Independence without bloodshed, a feat which few countries had achieved,” he said.

On why Kampung Luagan was picked as the venue for the convoy launching, Sum said it was a gesture of appreciation to the villagers for supporting the BN in the May 5 general election.

To the people of Lawas, Sum urged them to appreciate the true meaning of independence and to uphold the spirit of unity, cooperation and patriotism.

“It is not enough just to fly flags in the month of our independence celebration. Make it a practice to strengthen unity among all races and work with all quarters to ensure our country’s well-being is upheld.”

Sum advised the people to shun anyone who promoted disunity.

At the event, he presented a grant of RM15,000 to the Kampung Luagan 1Malaysia Community for their activities.

PBB Bukit Sari Youth also gave assistance to single mothers and senior citizens.
