KOTA KINABALU: Parents of students studying in riot-plagued Egypt are advised to remain calm and they are assured of the safety of their children.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the Malaysian missions in the country were doing everything necessary to keep all Malaysian citizens safe and protected.

He added the state government was also working closely and maintaining constant communication with Wisma Putra to supervise students from Sabah in Egypt as well as monitore the situation in the country.

“We have many students in Egypt and thank God they are all in good condition at the moment. We hope the situation there will improve soon,” he said to reporters when met at Wisma Innoprise here yesterday.

Without revealing the number of Sabah students still in Egypt or if any of them had been brought back home, Arifin said his office was waiting for the latest information from Malaysian centres in the country.

He said the state government would continue to work closely with Wisma Putra and would follow suit any decision to be made by the central government in regards to the extraction of the students, should the need arise.

Most students from the state are in the major cities, including Kaherah and Iskandaria, but none of them were reported to be injured or involved in any of the riots there.

“We always remind them not to be involved in any activities other than those for their studies, and I would like to ask the parents to remain calm as the authority will continue to gather and share the latest information pertaining to the condition of their children,” he said.

According to the latest figure reported yesterday, there are 3,300 Malaysians still living and studying in Egypt but none were harmed since violence erupted between security forces and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi.
