KOTA KINABALU: A local woman claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday after denying a charge of cheating a man of RM5,000.

Cheng Nyin Leng, 21, pleaded not guilty before magistrate Edward Paul to the charge framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of not less than one year and not more than 10 years and with whipping, and shall also be liable to a fine upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Lim Swee Beng told the court that the accused was alleged to have cheated the man using a fake business licence to induce him (the victim) to lend her RM5,000 as a loan in July this year at Beverly Hills in Penampang.

The court fixed September 3 for her case management and September 19 for trial.

Cheng, who was unrepresented, was released on a RM4,000 bail with two local sureties.
