KUCHING: The standard operating procedure (SOP) for late birth registration is different from those that are registered on time.

The National Registration Department (NRD) considers a birth registration as late if it were made more than 42 days after the birth of the child in Malaysia.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said some people were unaware there were two SOPs, and they tend to make an issue out of it.

He assured the government was doing its best to overcome this matter.

“The problem is some people do not understand, and these people will later complain that there are many bureaucracies in NRD,” he told reporters after making a visit to NRD Sarawak yesterday.

“Even if the registration is late, issuance of the document applied for would be done accordingly if proper documents were submitted.”

Wan Junaidi said NRD used modern technologies to give a good service to the people.

“The main central processing unit is in Kuala Lumpur, but the department in various states can identify which counter is idle and provide information to the staff concerned on how to solve whatever problems he or she may be facing.

“It works on real time processing, and it makes the issuance of documents such as MyKad fast.”

Wan Junaidi said NRD needed this kind of system as it was dealing with data pertaining to birth, marriage and death.
