MAC of 200 supercars to climax with convoy

KUCHING: Le’Park behind the civic centre here was filled with an astounding array of sports and high performance cars proudly displayed during the first day of the Merdeka Auto Carnival (MAC) 2013 organised by the Sarawak Auto-Enthusiasts Society (SAS).

Cars of various makes such as the Mitsubishi Evolution, Mazda RX7 up to the classic makes such as the Mazda RX3, are taking part in the autoshow where around 200 cars from various clubs were displayed at the event which is expected to end today (Aug 25).

According to SAS vice president Wan Asraq Arif, clubs such as Toyota Vios Club, Kia Motorsports Club, Forte Club, BLM Sarawak and Mira Avy Sarawak were among the ‘big boys’ showcased in the auto display.

“We will also hold an autokhana open day, dance competition, and also photography competition. The climax of the event tomorrow (today) is definitely the Merdeka Convoy, where an expected 250 cars headed by the Kuching Supercar Club will be making a 53-km route around Kuching city to show patriotism in conjunction with the 50th Malaysia Day celebration,” he said.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is scheduled to flag off the Merdeka Convoy at 2.30pm at Le’Park.

Other gripping events include a street party, mountain biking competition and an array of exhibition booths. Visitors can also savour the visitors’ drift joyride and ‘Night Drift Attack’ where regular ‘drifters’ will excite the crowd with stunts made popular in the ‘Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift’ movie.

The MAC is the second major event organised by SAS since it was registered last year, as the association aims to elevate the auto scene in Sarawak as well as to encourage healthy activities among youths.
