KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to extend the 1Malaysia Book Voucher (BB1M) scheme on a one-off basis to about 82,000 new matriculation and lower six students.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said all students would receive BB1M vouchers valued at RM250 each which will be valid until Oct 31.

“The BB1M will be distributed during the first week of September through the respective matriculation colleges and schools,” said Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, in a statement here yesterday.

The BB1M was introduced to lighten the burden of expenditure on books as well as to cultivate an interest in reading among Malaysians.

The scheme announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in the 2013 Budget last September will benefit 1.3 million students involving an allocation of RM325 million. — Bernama
