RM210m project to change Lawas skyline

LAWAS: A RM210 million state government office complex cum shopping mall will be built here soon.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud launched the project yesterday in conjunction with his Hari Raya visit.

The project, which spans 2.5 acres next to Lawas Town Square and Hotel SeriMalaysia, is undertaken by state government-linked company Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (BDC) and Lawas Mall Sdn Bhd of the Sendayan Group of Companies.

The proposed three-storey Lawas Mall will have a supermarket, departmental store and 132 commercial lots.

The RM90 million project is expected to take 30 months.

It is the first commercial complex of its kind here, and the developer is confident it will be well received by the local community for it will boost the economy and create jobs.

The 15-storey government office complex, costing RM120 million, will house government   departments and agencies.

Its gross floor area is 29,750 sq. metres.

To commemorate the  launching of the project, Taib and his wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib each planted a tree at the project site.

Those present included Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and  wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Datuk Awang Daud, Assistant Minister of Housing Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also BDC chairman and Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong.

About 5,000 people attended the launching ceremony.
