GEORGE TOWN: Police are prepared to face any new threat of intrusion into Sabah’s East Coast, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He was commenting on the dissemination of an SMS yesterday which alleged 13 armed Sulus had arrived at Kampung Belacan, Tawau, Sabah to capture the district.

“This is not the first time we received such information, nonetheless, we will check carefully so as not to let the matter slip from our view.

“At the moment, I do not want to confirm or deny the matter,” he told RTM and Bernama in conjunction with his three-day working visit to Penang, yesterday.

Khalid said police had a strong line of defence with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), Malaysian Armed Forces and police to face any eventuality.

He also warned of action against individuals who deliberately spread false information to frighten the people, especially the communities in the East Coast of Sabah.

Khalid called on eastern Sabah residents not to be influenced by propaganda of irresponsible groups which wanted to create fear among the people and told the residents to have confidence in the authorities in fighting external threats.

In another development, Khalid said police would be calling a local actor born in Singapore to assist in investigations pertaining to a case where vulgar SMS and pictures were sent to the wife of a businessman in Johor Baharu.

He said police’s investigations found the actor and woman had never met each other and only communicated via social network.

On another matter, Khalid confirmed police had released national laureate Datuk A Samad Said over the issue of flying the ‘Sang Saka Malaya’ flag which the latter had alleged was the true Malaysian flag after recording his statement. — Bernama
