SAMARAHAN: The State government, through the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), will continue to organise more sports science and sports management courses to improve the standard of professionalism among coaches and athletes.

Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said such efforts are necessary and important in order to produce more high performance and quality athletes in the future.

“We will work very closely with the Education Ministry, MSNS and ISN to organise more such courses,” he told reporters after clsoing the first Sports Science Level I Course at Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Abdul Razak (IPG TAR) here yesterday.

Seventy-five people including 23 trainee teachers from the institute, 20 school teachers, coaches from associations and Paralympic bodies took part in the course.

The six-day course started on Sept 2 and was conducted by Dr Chin Ngien Siong, a lecturer from IPG TAR and Dr Ong Kong Swee from IPG Rejang, Sibu, and speakers Lim Eng Hooi and Gordon Nicolaus Jemat.

Among the topics covered were coaching philosophy, sports in Malaysia, anatomy and sports physiology, coaching competency, nutrition, sports injury and sports medicine, biomechanics, motor behaviour, sports psychology and physical conditioning.

According to Lee, who is also Assistant Minister of Communication, a Sports Science Level II was held recently in March and a Sports Management Course will be organised from Sept 30 to Oct 5.

“All coaches/teacher coaches must have knowledge of sports science because it will help to improve the sports performance of the athletes,” said Lee.

Lee said similar courses will be organised for trainee teachers in order to equip them with the knowledge and to enable them to unearth new talents as well as to train students professionally.

“It is also important that the athletes should have knowledge of sports science so that they are capable of taking good care of themselves while training or competing, to avoid sports injuries,” added Lee.

Also present at the event were IPG TAR head of management services unit Ahap Awal and MSNS assistant director, Linda Ling.
