BESUT: The government is still not encouraging Malaysian students to return to Egypt to continue their studies as the situation there is still uncertain and unstable.

Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the government made the decision based on the reports received from the National Security Council (NSC) and the current developments there with the curfew still being imposed.

In addition, he said, the report also showed that almost all the other countries had brought home their students recently and had not allowed their students to continue their studies there.

“What is happening in Egypt now should be taken as a lesson by Malaysians, particularly those who are very keen to follow the negative culture to topple the government,” he told reporters after launching the ‘Jelajah Merdeka 2013 Programme’ by the Community College, under the Malaysian Education Ministry at the Dataran Pantai Air Tawar, near Kampung Raja, here yesterday.

Also present were the State Assemblyman for Kuala Besut, Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, Kota Putera Assemblyman Mohd Mahdi Muda and Jerteh Assemblyman Muhammad Pehimi Yusoh as well as the Director-General of the Community Colleges, Amir Md Noor.

However, he said, the ministry was endeavouring to have discussions with several private and public institutons of higher learning as well as certain other parties to find a way so that the students who had returned from Egypt could be emplaced temporarily to study at the local institutions.

“Currently, we are looking at several alternative countries for the students to continue their studies especially in medicine such as in Indonesia and India,” he said.  — Bernama
