Elderly woman, pregnant mother trapped in their homes

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly woman and a pregnant woman were among those reported trapped in their homes in Sunday’s flash floods.

Fire and Rescue Services Department public relations officer Senior Assistant Superintendent Mohd Affendy Ramin said the elderly woman, identified only as Norhanidah and a pregnant woman, identified only as Nurul Aniza, were trapped after their homes at Kampung Kibabaig, Penampang were submerged by flood waters since 1pm on Sunday.

“The State Fire and Rescue Services Department received reports on two people being trapped in their homes due to the flash flood.

“A team of Fire and Rescue Services personnel was deployed to the scene around 10am for a rescue operation,” he said, adding that both women were rescued from their homes.

They are now taking shelter at their relative’s house.

Mohd Affendy said a single-storey house at Kampung Tunoh, Kolopis, Penampang was also destroyed in a landslide.

However, he said no casualty was reported in the incident while the Fire and Rescue Services personnel were at the scene to help the family to evacuate their homes for safety reason.

Meanwhile, Mohd Affendy said 21 people, including 12 children, were rescued by Fire and Rescue Services personnel after the flash floods hit the state capital and its surroundings.

He said among the areas where the rescue operations were carried out were Sungai Movog in Penampang where two people were rescued, eight people including four children at Kampung Tembobon in Lok Kawi, a family of four at Kampung Kibabaig, Penampang and seven people, including four girls at Kampung Sarikan, Putatan.

Mohd Affendy said no casualties or unwanted incidents were reported while all the victims were reported to be in good health and were given temporary shelter in their respective villages.
