JITRA: Technical education and vocational training (TEVT) should be mainstreamed to realise the nation’s aspiration to produce more highly skilled workers in the future, said Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.

The member of the Kedah Council of Regency said this was because the country needed to increase the proportion of highly skilled manpower from 23 per cent to 37 per cent by 2015.

“Therefore, TEVT should be mainstreamed not only to achieve the nation’s manpower targets, but to also uplift the mage of TEVT in the eyes of society,” she said at the 27th convocation ceremony of Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Mua’dzam Shah (Polimas) here yesterday.

Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said educational institutions like the polytechnics could help determine the future of Malaysian society and the country, hence it needed to produce holistic and balanced graduands to bring about excellence in all sectors.

She said graduands, meanwhile, should continue honing their skills and seeking knowledge even after they had left formal education, have good personality and character as well as good values and attitude so that they could deal with any situation wisely and effectively.

Since its establishment in 1984, Polimas has produced 38,644 graduands n various fields, and the 1,959 graduands this time completed
their studies in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology and commerce. — Bernama
