LABUAN: Youths in Labuan now have the chance to get involved in the extreme sport of paramotor.

Labuan Paramotor Club chairman Captain Lamit Abidin said the paramotor club that had just been formed in Labuan this year was intended to attract youth involvement in paramotor sport.

“This sport that is being stereotyped as high risk and dangerous, is yet to be popular, and unknown among the locals. When you know this sport, only then you will think it is safer compared to the other extreme sports on land.

“Our club has just been formed and yet to have registered members, but we are in process to register them.

“Youths who are interested in this sport but cannot afford to buy the sport equipment can join the club,” he said.

Labuan Paramotor Club and Limbang Paramotor Club co-organised the paramotor clinic at Sungai Pagar Beach here on September 14, from 2pm till 4pm.

Lamit said the uniqueness of this sport was that when you are above in the sky, you would feel the beauty as you could see the earth while flying and at the same time the sport could build your character.

“It is not easy for us to be in the sky if we do not have character. This sport indirectly trains oneself not to give up easily.

“Our rise and fall during training will build our strength to face the challenges, and the strength is the reason you can fly.

“This sport also educates us to be responsible to ourselves where we must make the right and quick decision when we are alone in the sky,” he said, adding that there would be no fee for training.

Lamit said the paramotor sport would be able to help the tourism sector in Labuan, as the scenery of the island was beautiful to watch from above.

Those interested to join the club can contact him at 017-8344383.

Meanwhile, Limbang Paramotor Club chairman Captain Ali Jahar said the first clinic was intended to introduce the sport to the people here, especially the youth.

“This sport can contribute to the sport tourism industry here as the beach along Sungai Pagar is really suitable for this sport, plus the wind can help the paramotor pilot glide in the sky.

“People from Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak, Peninsular and even from foreign countries can come here for the paramotor sport.

“We have received good response in this clinic from youths who are interested in the sport,” he said, adding that he started to get involved in this sport back in 2003.

He had also piloted more than 600 times in paramotor sport around Miri, Brunei, Sipitang and Limbang.
