SIBU: A 49-year-old man was yesterday ordered by the Sessions Court here to stay behind bars for eight weeks after he pleaded guilty to stealing.

The court also ordered him to make RM6,000 compensatory payment to his victim.

Law King Tie was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine or both.

The court invoked Section 426 (1A) of the Criminal Procedure Code when ordering Law to compensate his victim by Sept 23 at the latest.

Law was also fined RM500 or one month’s jail under Section 7(1) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, punishable under Section 25(1)(n) of the same regulations for failure to present his Mykad when the police asked for it during his arrest.

Law robbed a 75-year-old woman of her bag about 7am on July 17 in Khoo Peng Loong Road.

A crowd swarmed round him when the woman, surnamed Wong, shouted for help.

When policemen arrived shortly later, Law jumped into a river to escape arrest, but surrendered 15 minutes later after being coaxed by the police.

He was placed under arrest as soon as he climbed up the river bank with injuries to a leg.
