Seeded players sail to second round of S’wak Junior tourney

KUCHING: There were no upsets on the first day of Sarawak Junior Closed badminton championship second leg yesterday as seeded players moved into the next round of the competition at Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA)

Boys Under 15 singles top seed, Wilson Lau Ngie Ding of Miri, who received a bye in the first round, emerged a 21-5, 21-7 winner over Kiing Chew Jun of Liew Wah Sam Training Centre (LWS) in the second round.

His third round opponent is Johan Ko Chiong Xu from Pro Wira Sibu (PWS) who defeated Bryan Lee Kuok Min of Kuching Badminton Association (KBA) in straight sets of 21-14, 21-13.

Tournament second seed, Aaron Chieng Jin Yu, also from LWS dispatched Ambrose Wong Hong Ann of Miri to the sidelines with a 21-11, 21-18 scoreline.

Chieng will now play Jeremy Kho of Pacific Badminton Management for a place in the last eight.

Joining Lau and Chieng in the last 16 are joint third/fourth seeds Liew Yew Hou of LWS and Lai Wei Jie of Miri.

In the Boys Under 15 doubles, six pairs moved into the second round after winning their first round matches.

They are Chin Hui Zhe-Kwan Cheng Wei of Miri Badminton Centre (MBC) who beat the SBA pair of Aidan Nanggin and Jodan Chia 21-15, 18-21, 21-18, Kiing Chew Xuan-Marvin Ng Yun of LWS who beat Chong Cheong Yong Training Centre’s Alvin Poh-Joshua Chiew 21-7, 21-10, SBA’s Geoffrey Tan-Leonard Lee who overcame Lester Bong-Tay Kwang Thia of Jeff Vision Club 21-13, 21-2.

Other matches saw Kiing Chew Jun-Zachary Sia of LWS beating KBA’s Brian Kho-Yii Zhi Yong 21-11, 21-10 and Lai Wei Jie-Ong Yen Chang of Miri beating PWS’ Johan Ko-Kelvin Wong 21-15, 21-10.

The Girls Under 15 doubles saw Kam Wei Li of Yong Ping Ping of Miri staging a great comeback from one set down 17-21 to beat the SBA pair of Felicia Fong and Kristy Tay 21-15, 21-18.

Kam-Yong will next face Sharon Thien (SBA)-Shawn Lee (LWS) who beat SBA’s Jee Yu Fei-Joyce Voon 21-14, 21-16, in their next round robin league match before taking on Jee Yu Fei-Joyce Voon and the LWS pair of Valerie Liong-Yong Xing Xiu.
