SANDAKAN: Elopura assemblyman, Au Kam Wah has said that Sandakan people choosing to work outside of their hometown is one of the reason for the lack of human resource in most of the private companies here.

Au said this during a press conference at the Mini Job Expo held at Sandakan Community Hall here yesterday.

“Locals go to Kuala Lumpur or even overseas for higher wages,” he said.

He advised those attending the expo to consider working at local companies as it would give them an advantage of being near to their family members.

“When you work in your own hometown, you are indirectly contributing to the development of your town,” he added.

Au stated that the rate of unemployment in Sabah is currently at 5.3% to 5.5%.

He said that the unemployment issue in the State, particularly in Sandakan is due to people who are picky when they are looking for a job.

“The locals let the immigrants take the jobs that they don’t want, and now they complain that they are jobless” he said.

He then gave an example of local restaurants.

“The people working in restaurants are mostly not local, because the locals do not want to take up a physically challenging job. With the minimum wage of RM800 today, I do not think that it is a problem to get a job to support a living”

He advised the people of Sabah particularly in Sandakan to take the opportunity to try out different jobs for experience.

“It is better than being jobless,” he added.
