PM begins working visit to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak arrived here yesterday to begin his working visit to San Francisco and New York until Sept  29.

Najib, accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, arrived on a special flight which departed from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sepang at 5.45 pm Saturday.

Najib is on a working visit to San Francisco to attend the 3rd Global Science and Innovation Advisory Council (GSIAC) meeting from Sept 22 to 24.

He will also officiate at the high level Forum on Green Future and Green Energy which will be participated by international and national council members who are global experts on science and innovation.

The GSIAC was initiated by the prime minister in 2010 as part of his ongoing efforts to transform Malaysia into a high-income economy through enhancing Malaysia’s capabilities in science and innovation.

The Prime Minister will also attend the 7th BIO-International Advisory Panel meeting and visit Silicon Valley, which includes a tour of the headquarters of Twitter and Google.

Among the highlights of his visit to the Silicon Valley, his first since he became the prime minister in 2009, are meetings with the senior management teams at Twitter and Google, tweeting from Twitter’s headquarters and chatting with Malaysian Googlers at Google.

Najib is accompanied by some cabinet ministers including Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and senior government officials in San Francisco.

The Prime Minister will leave for New York on Sept 24 to lead Malaysia’s delegation to the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York from Sept 25 to 29.

On Sept 26, the prime minister is scheduled to deliver a statement at the High Level Meeting of the General Assembly on Nuclear Disarmament and on Sept 28, Malaysia’s statement during the General Debate.

Also on Sept 28, Najib is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at an Asia Society event and meet with key industry players from Asean countries and the United States (US) during a luncheon with the US-Asean Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce.

Apart from that, he will host a dinner for the Malaysian community in New York later that night. — Bernama
