KUALA LUMPUR: Batu Burok assemblyman Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to two charges in relation to the organisation of the Blackout 505 rally in June.
The first charge was that Syed Azman, 52, had organised the rally in contravention of the condition set by Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad which was to obtain the approval of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to use Padang Merbok as the venue.
He is accused of committing the offence at Padang Merbok, Jalan Parlimen here between 2 and 6pm on June 22, under Section 15(3) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 which is punishable by a fine of up to RM10,000, if convicted.
Syed Azman also faced an alternative charge of failing to submit a copy of the DBKL approval (dated June 12 2013) to Zainuddin 10 days prior to the rally under Section 9(1) of the same Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 if convicted.
Judge Mat Ghani Abdullah set bail at RM3,000 without a surety and fixed Oct 22 for case management and Dec 9 and 10 for the hearing.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurulhuda Muhamad Nor conducted the prosecution while Syed Azman was represented by lawyer Arif Azami Husin.
The court also allowed his case to be jointly tried with Seremban member of parliament Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Pandan member of parliament Mohd Rafizi Ramli and Parti Keadilan Rakyat secretariat Muhammad Adib Ishar who previously faced the same charges. — Bernama
