GEORGE TOWN: The Penang police chief has received several threatening short messaging service (SMS) from an unidentified individual, in what police suspect to be linked to their gunning down of five thugs belonging to the notorious Gang 04, last month.

The shootout involving the police and the thugs, belonging to the notorious Gang 04, occurred about 5am at an apartment in Sungai Nibong on Aug 19.

Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi received the threatening SMS’s when he was at his office in the state police headquarters about 9am on Monday. About 9pm yesterday, he lodged a report at the Timor Laut district police headquarters.

Among the messaging services which he had received read as follows:

“Hello, Penang chief, let me remind you that you have already ‘taken’ five of my friends. Don’t think you are the best.

“Watch your back…we can ‘take’ you (out) or your friends.”

It is learnt that Abdul Rahim, who could not be contacted for comments, lodged the police report for the security of his family and colleagues in Penang.

When contacted, Federal CID director Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah confirmed that the SMS’s were sent to the Penang police chief and that investigations were underway.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim’s deputy, Datuk A Thaiveegan, who was transferred to Penang last week, was not spared of the threatening SMS, either.

He received the SMS last Thursday, while at his office in the police contingent about 4pm, from an individual who claimed to be a member of a secret society in Klang, Selangor.

According to the SMS, the sender threatened to shoot the former Selangor police deputy chief and his colleagues who had mounted operations and shot secret society members in that state.

It also gave Thaiveegan’s car model and registration number to indicate that they were aware of his movements.

It is understood that the SMS threat to Thaiveegan was linked to the ongoing nationwide police operation, ‘Operasi Cantas Khas’ or ‘Ops Cantas’, and the tracking and gunning down of hardcore criminals from secret societies. — Bernama
