KUANTAN: Accidents involving heavy vehicles resulted in 832 deaths from January to Sept this year.

A total of 1,481 accidents were reported in that period. Last year, 2,491 accidents involving heavy vehicles were recorded with 176 drivers losing their lives.

The overall death toll due to road accidents last year was 1,241 people.

Federal police traffic chief Datuk Abd Aziz Yusof said to tackle this serious problem of loss of lives because of accidents involving heavy vehicles, the Police, Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) were mounting continuous integrated road safety operations.

Speaking to reporters after participating in one such operation at the Gebeng Industral Estate here yesterday, he said one of the major causes of accidents involving heavy vehicles was overloading.

“There have been cases of lorries overloading by more than 80 per cent. They pose a serious road safety risk,” he said.

On yesterday’s operation, he said 39 lorries were found to be overloading and that summonses were issued to the drivers. — Bernama
