SIBU: A total of 40 coaches of various sports from the Central region attended the one-day ‘Basic Nutrition Coaching Course’ organised by NSC and assisted by the State Sports Council at a local hotel here yesterday morning.

Speaking at the opening of the course, National Sports Council (NSC) Director of Coaching Ahmad Zawawi Zakaria  told the coaches to adopt an aggressive approach and show commitment in their pursuit to produce elite athletes.

He noted that athletes needed to be pushed to train hard thus without stringent supervision it would be difficult to produce athletes of national calibre.

“If you want to produce excellent athletes who can bring glory to the country, the only way forward is to go all out, act tough and work hard,” he added.

Dr Nik Nhanita Safil was the chief instructor for the course which covered sport nutrition guideline, food intake, body’s composition and hydration assessment.

Zawawi said the coaches should upgrade themselves on science sports and specific sports to bring about a greater understanding of each sport.

Comparing wushu and badminton, he said the athletes differed in their needs and requirements and that was what the coaches needed to understand and differentiate.

He also reminded the coaches to go for a higher level of coaching, not only to get a better pay but also to gain respect and affirmation from the athletes or the mass media.

He also reminded the coaches to do their monthly report and submitted them to the sports council for assessment.
