SANDAKAN: A 35-year-old police officer was attacked by a prison warden and ten other men armed with canes and helmets behind Hsiang Garden after he visited a female friend at her house here, yesterday.

He lodged a police report immediately after the incident at 1.05am, stating that he was visiting a friend who had asked for his help to send her to Kinabatangan as her grandfather had passed away.

Further investigation revealed that the 36-year-old woman who asked for the victim’s help, was going through a divorce and is currently separated from her husband.

According to Police Chief ACP Rowell Marong, the woman’s 43-year-old husband, who works as a prison warden, went to the location of the incident with ten other men and attacked the victim after he left the woman’s house.

Following the incident, the victim suffered injuries on his head, arm and fingers, and was sent to Hospital Duchess of Kent here for medical treatment.

The case is investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for the offence of possessing weapons or missiles at a riot, which is punishable by imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or with both.

Rowell said that the investigation has also included the possibility of jealousy and personal vengeance as the cause of the crime.
