Local man jailed for impersonating cop

TAWAU:A 32-year-old local man was sentenced to 42 months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for impersonating a police officer.

Magistrate Suhaila Selag meted out the sentence on Ramli bin Limudin who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 170 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, on April 22 at about 7pm, the victim was contacted by a corporal attached at the Tawau Airport and was informed that a police officer from Kuala Lumpur wanted to rent a car.

At about 8.30pm at the airport police station, the victim handed a Proton Waja to the accused who said he was assigned to investigate the Lahad Datu intrusion case and the police were involved. The accused told the victim to keep the matter a secret.

On May 2013, the victim went to the Tawau police station’s guard house twice to take envelopes that were left there with ASP Ramli’s name written on them. Inside the envelopes was money for the car rental. The first payment was RM100 and the second was RM300.

The last time the victim met the accused was in May because the accused said he always went to Kota Kinabalu and payments would be made through a bank.

The victim was always contacted through the phone and after the victim was unable to contact the accused, he felt suspicious and found that the accused was impersonating a police officer as ASP Ramli.

Deputy public prosecutor Kamalia Yahdi prosecuted the case.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old motorcycle mechanic was fined RM3,500, in default, seven months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possession of drugs.

Magistrate Ferhansah Farene meted out the sentence on Junaidi bin Yubit who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides a fine of no more than RM100,00 or five years’ imprisonment, or both.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Rozalinna Baharuddin told the court that the accused was caught in possession of 0.008 gram of methamphetamine on July 6 about 1am inside a room at an unnumbered house at Kampung Sungai Gading.

Policemen acting on information about motorcycle thefts, went to the house and the door was opened by the accused. While the policemen were investigating, a green plastic box of Mentos was found beside a wall and inside the box were the drugs.
