CRUCIAL EXAM: SPM students from SMK Balai Ringin, SMK Gedong, SMK Serian and SMK Tebakang, attendin the one-day SPM Clinic to prepare for the November exam.

KUCHING: As part of its on-going educational programmes, the Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) recently organised a one-day “SPM Clinic” for students of SMK Balai Ringin in Serian.

The programme, in cooperation with Serian Iban Remun Association (SIRA), were for those who will be sitting for the SPM examination this coming November.

It was attended by 200 students mainly from SMK Balai Ringin with some coming from SMK Gedong, SMK Serian and SMK Tebakang.

SDGA president Dr Dusit Jaul reminded students of the challenges ahead of them.

He reiterated the importance of having an excellent pass for the SPM examination as this will determine their future direction. To illustrate his point, he gave as an example the government’s criteria for sending student to study overseas whereby the minimum requirement is a score of 9As.

In the past, Dayak students have not fared well in a public examination like SPM, thus jeopardising the golden opportunity of getting an overseas education.

He challenged students of SMK Balai Ringin to prove their worth to society, that armed with commitment, discipline and a burning desire to excel, rural students are no less capable than their urban counterparts. This requires students to really focus on their studies in these remaining weeks as in his words, they are in actual fact, preparing themselves to face an important war in their lives.
