Man jailed 25 years for killing lover

FATAL ATTRACTION: Policemen lead Chong out of the court room to start his jail term.

MIRI: The Sessions Court here sentenced a man to 25 years’ jail for killing his lover, a single mother, at Taman Senadin here three years ago.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud sentenced Chong Soi Nguan, 39, of Bandar Baru Permjaya, to 25 years’ jail from the maximum 30 years provided under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code for murdering his 28-year-old girlfriend, Tang Chuo Lang.

The offence was committed between 2.40am and 5.30am on Sept 26, 2010 at Lot 5806, Jalan Maigold in Taman Desa Senadin.

The judge ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Chong.

In passing sentence, Kerisnada said the accused had committed a very serious offence that involved the loss of a life, which the court could not tolerate.

“In this case, the court did not

see any provocation from the victim, and it happened because you failed to control yourself. Because of you, the family, including the children, has lost their loved one,” he scolded the accused.

He also said the action of the victim also caused the victim’s father to die of sadness.

The heavy sentence imposed on the accused which took effect yesterday would serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

The prosecution has called 26 witnesses to testify in the trial where the defence counsel also called the accused to give a statutory declaration. A total of 64 exhibit items were presented during the trial.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Syakil Zulkfili prosecuted while the accused was defended by Ranbir Singh Sangha.
