MAKING SURE: Traffic police check on a bus driver.

KUCHING: The police here yesterday kicked off its ‘Operasi Khas Trafik’ to catch bus drivers with traffic warrants that have not yet been settled.

The operation will be carried out throughout the state continuously until a date yet to be announced.

“Location-wise, we will be focusing our attention on bus terminals as well as parking spots for these types of public transportation.

“The aim of this operation is to encourage people to pay their summonses, and they will be checked to see if they have any records of unsettled summonses.

“This operation also aims to reduce the rate of road accidents as lately a lot of accidents involved buses,” said traffic officer DSP Alexson Naga from the police headquarters. He explained that once a driver with unsettled traffic warrant is caught, he would be put on police bail and brought to court at the earliest date possible.

According to Alexson, road accident statistics show that buses come third after four-wheel drive vehicles and cars. He added that statistics also show that motorcyclists and pillion riders top the number of deaths from road accidents.
