29 Labuan students detained at fun outlets

LABUAN: Twenty-nine students were detained in a joint operation at several entertainment outlets here on Wednesday afternoon.

Labuan police chief Superintendent Adzhar Othman yesterday said the students, aged below 18, including four girls, were brought to the police station for documentation before being handed over to their families and teachers.

“Nine police officers and personnel, and another eight officers from Labuan Education Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, Health Department and Labuan Islamic Religious Department were involved in the operation.

“A total of 42 individuals were checked during the operation on that day, which was intended to tackle immoral activities among students, including truancy,” he said.

Adzhar also disclosed that 10 burglars aged 14 to 39 had been arrested by in an operation from Sept 19 to Oct 1.

The suspects were being detained at separate locations here and some stolen items were seized from them.

“This operation was carried out after several burglaries were reported here on this island. The suspects detained are from two gangs identified as ‘Black’ and ‘Adam.’

“The suspects comprise of both locals and foreigners, out of which seven are men.

“We believe that with their arrest, the police have resolved the six cases of burglary here which were lodged since January,” he said.

Among the items seized from the suspects were electronic and electrical goods including handphones, laptops and grasscutting machines.

The total value of the items was estimated at RM25,000.

One of the suspects was charged in court on September 30 under Section 379 of the Penal Code, while the rest are still being investigated under Section 457 and 411 of the same for burglary and possessing stolen items.

They will be on remand until Oct 6.

In a separate case, Adzhar disclosed that police are still searching for the suspect in a rape case involving a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

He said that the suspect identified as Mohd Hadi Fauzi Mohd Musa, a 20 year-old from Kuala Penyu, had allegedly committed the crime on Sept 26 at Kampung Jawa here.

As the suspect is currently believed to be out of Labuan, police are calling on the public for any information of his whereabouts to help in the case investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
