OPS CANTAS: Harun (centre) and other officers holding the three homemade guns and other seized items during a press conference yesterday.

BINTULU: Tatau district police seized three homemade guns and a shotgun during a check on a car along KM1 of Tatau-Bintulu road around 9pm last Saturday.

According to its district police chief DSP Harun Jaafar, the special operations conducted under Ops Cantas also found 16 rounds of ammunition and four machetes in the car that carried six men.

He also said the shotgun was registered under another person’s name.

“The suspects aged between 31 and 50 are currently remanded for three days until October 9 to enable further investigations to be carried out on their motives and purposes of possessing the weapons,” he said in a press conference at Tatau district police headquarters near here yesterday.

The suspects are investigated under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 and if convicted can be sentenced up to 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or both.

“I therefore advise the public in Tatau district in particular not to keep any homemade guns or air rifle because it is against the law,” he said.

He added that borrowing a shotgun registered under other people’s name when one has no licence is also against the law and if caught the licensed owner of the shotgun will also be punished.

Since launching Ops Cantas, Harun said they had arrested four illegal immigrants and issued 32 traffic summonses.

“The police in the meantime will intensify crime prevention operations, particularly those involving the use of firearms and vehicle theft that seems to be increasing in the division,” he said.
