KUCHING: A trader suffered over RM50,000 in losses after burglars broke into his house and carted away cash and other valuables yesterday.

The victim, in his 30s, discovered the incident when he arrived at his house at Jalan Semaba here around 7.30am and saw that the front door had been forcibly opened.

He soon discovered that the entire house had been ransacked. Missing were over two dozen pieces of gold jewellery belonging to his wife, several thousand ringgit in cash, a laptop as well as personal documents.

A police report of the incident has been lodged.

In an unrelated incident, thieves robbed a construction worker at knife-point before carting away over a tonne of iron components from a site at Jalan Lumba Kuda yesterday.

The victim, aged 32, told police that he woke up around 3am to find a group of masked men carrying machetes inside his living quarters.

One of them then placed a machete against his neck and relieved him of his mobile phone and cash, while the others began loading iron rods and other components from the site into two four-wheel drive vehicles.

After the robbers fled the scene, the uninjured victim made his way to the nearby Sekama police station where he lodged a report of the incident.
