MIRI: A Penan woman was killed in a horrific accident while crossing Lutong-Pujut road with her husband yesterday.

Julan Batang, 42, and her husband Upek Usan, 48, from Long Palai, Ulu Baram had wanted to go to the National Registration Department (JPN) to apply for MyKads after dropping by a relative’s house in Piasau.

Upek said minutes before the accident occurred at around 9am, they were holding hands before crossing the road near the Pujut flyover.

“Somehow she lost hold of my hand and I proceeded to cross the road and waited for her at the central road divider. Moments later while my wife was in the middle of the road, a bus from Lutong hit her,” he told reporters in between sobs.

Julan’s body was later sent to Miri Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

The couple had been in Miri for about a month to look for jobs, and were renting a room in Sungai Adong. They have three sons aged eight months to two years.

Meanwhile, Miri District police chief ACP Mun Kok Keong said police have taken a statement from the bus driver to help with the investigation.

He reminded pedestrians to take extra care when crossing roads.

“Don’t take the risk in crossing the busy road and when there are overhead bridges, use them,” said Mun.
