KOTA KINABALU: Three burglars wanted by the police were among 12 people arrested during the continuous Ops Cantas around the state capital.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said the wanted criminals were arrested together with 12 others for drug abuse and possession of dangerous weapons during the four-hour operation from 11pm on Friday to 3am yesterday.

“The wanted men were detained around the city centre for several housebreaking cases while 10 men were detained after their preliminary urine tested positive for drugs.

“Police also detained two men for carrying a 14-cm Bugis knife (keris Bugis),” he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Jauteh said the operation was carried out around the city centre, namely at Waterfront, Sinsuran, Segama, Safma fish market, Taman Poket, Api-Api Centre and Jesselton Point.

He said the police also checked 195 men and 89 women, who they believe were illegal immigrants, for their documents at eight budget hotels and five coffee shops.

The police had also inspected 34 vehicles and 17 motorcycles for minor offenses, he said.

Jauteh said the main purpose of Ops Cantas was to target those police believe were involved in crime such as thieves, drug addicts, Mat Rempit and gangsters.

He added that the operation would be carried out from time to time to fight crime in the state capital.
