KANGAR: The police detained a couple and their four children last Saturday in Arau near here, following the seizure of ganja weighing 10kg in their car.

A plastic bag containing 10 slabs of dried ganja leaves was found in a Proton Saga which was parked near a restaurant.

A police team nabbed the family about 8.30pm, in the vicinity of the Tok Arau Complex.

Perlis police chief Datuk Zull Aznam Haron said the police had obtained a week-long order to remand the couple, aged 34 and 36, to facilitate investigations.

He said the children aged between one and eight, were handed over to the couple’s relatives to be in their care.

“We estimate the ganja to be worth about RM15,500. Nevertheless, its street value may triple that amount,” he told a news conference at his office here yesterday.

The police are investigating the couple under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. — Bernama
