SIBU: Members of the Sibu Coffee Shop & Restaurant Owners’ Association have agreed not to increase the prices of their beverages following a meeting last Sunday afternoon.

However, chairman Tong Ing Kok said the association had no control over non-members.

“If they want to increase the prices of their hot and cold drinks, I advise them display the full price-list for the sake of the customers,” he said.

He said some coffee shops may want to offer cheaper drinks to stay competitive.

Tong noted of inflation setting in following the government’s recent decision to cut fuel subsidy.

Nevertheless, he said drinks here were still comparatively cheaper than those in other countries such as Italy which he had just returned from a visit.

“A can of Coca-cola there is six Euro which is about RM20,” he corroborated.

Tong said his association was keeping the fingers crossed for the time being.

“I believe the announcement of the 2014 Budget on Oct 25 will be followed by inflation. Until then, we’re keeping the prices of our beverages.

“The last time we increased the prices was some time last year,” he said.

The association has over 300 members.
