Teo elected unopposed as LDP president

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) incumbent secretary general Datuk Teo Chee Kang was elected as party president unopposed after nomination confirmation from proposed candidates closed yesterday.

Also returned unopposed was Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin as the deputy president of the party.

Election committee (EC) chairman Yong Wui Chung, who is aligned to Teo’s faction, made the announcement after the nomination confirmation closed at noon yesterday.

Yong said the nominations for the forthcoming party elections were closed on September 16 this year. The EC announced the proposed candidates for the LDP Supreme Council, Central Youth and Women Movements on October 8.

A total of 243 candidates were proposed to contest for 52 leadership posts in the party. Of the 52 posts, only four proposed candidates were elected unopposed, namely, Teo, Chin, Chia Butf Shan @ Chiang Bhat Sing as deputy Youth leader and Wong Kuen Yin as deputy Women leader.

Yong said seven candidates have accepted their nominations to contest for the five vice president posts. They are Lim Kai Min, Chin Shu Ying, Albert Kok Yuk Ken, Datuk Lim Ming Hoo, Datuk Mok Cheh Hung @ Mok Kiong, Datuk Peter Chin Kee Yong and Pak Chee Eng.

A total of 41 candidates will be vying for the 15 Supreme Council member seats.

For the Central Youth Movement, Lim Ming Guan and Tsang Hieng Yee will be contesting for the Youth leader, while Ong Choon Chung, Siau Ket Hiung, Yong Ket Leong, Yii Ming Seng and Shim Tshin Choo will be vying for the three assistant Youth leader posts.

In addition, 20 candidates have accepted their nominations to contest for the 10 posts in the committee of the Central Youth Movement.

Meanwhile, Datin Shim Nyat Yun and Datin Margaret Chong Mui Ling are up against each other for the Women leader post.

Four candidates, namely, Ang Seow Kim, Lo Pit Lee, Ng Came Eng @ Wong Kum Ying, Winnie Fred Lingam and Lim Jit Lan @ Precilla are contesting for the three assistant Women leader posts, while 17 candidates will be vying for the 10 committee posts in the Central Women Movement.

Yong said the party congress will be held at the Star City convention hall on October 19 and 20 as scheduled. He urged delegates from the 29 divisions all over Sabah and observers to attend the party congress.
