KUALA LUMPUR: A car skidded, hit the road divider and burst into flames in Jalan Tun Razak here, causing traffic congestion that stretched for up to five kilometres.

The driver, a 45-year-old man believed to be from Bandar Baru Ampang, escaped unhurt, said a Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police spokesman.

The incident happened at about 7 am and caused a massive build-up of traffic along Jalan Tun Razak and roads leading to the city centre from Setapak and Ampang in the morning rush hour.

Ten firemen in two trucks from the Keramat and Titiwangsa fire stations rushed to the scene after a member of the public called the fire and rescue service at 7.14 am, said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Azizan Ismail.

“We learnt that the Toyota Vios car hit a road divider before bursting into flames. However, when we arrived, the driver of the car was not there. He may have been taken to hospital,” he said.

The firemen took about 20 minutes to douse the fire, he added. — BERNAMA
