SIBU: A 48-year-old woman charged with reckless driving which caused the death of a 16-year-old girl was discharged and acquitted by the magistrates’ court here yesterday.

Chaterine Chundang Usil was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, which provides for an imprisonment term of 10 years or a maximum fine of RM20,000 and possible suspension of driving licence upon conviction.

The charge said she committed the offence at Mile 26 Sibu-Bintulu Road at about 6.30am on Jan 4, 2009.

Chaterine was said to be behind the wheel of a 4-wheel-drive vehicle when it collided with a car with the 16-year-old Liyana in it.

When she appeared in court on March 13 to answer for the charge against her, Chaterine entered a not guilty plea and was released on RM10,000 bail with two local sureties.

Seven witnesses were called to testify against her in the trial which began on June 17.

The court said yesterday the prosecution had failed to prove prima facie against her.
