KUCHING: Olympic Games bronze medalist Pandelela Rinong is determined to defend the SEA Games gold medal that she won in Palembang, Indonesia two years ago.

The 10-metre individual platform will be the only event which she will compete in at this year’s 27th edition of the region’s biggest sports event to be held in Nay Pyi Daw, Myanmar in December.

Speaking to The Borneo Post yesterday, Pandelela revealed that she and 10 other national divers will travel to Guangzhou, China at the end of this month for their final preparations before the games.

“I have already started my intensive training two weeks ago. I am currently training at the National Aquatics Center in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur,” she said.

Pandelela also singled out Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Loh Zhiayi as potential medalists for the games.

“Despite both divers being younger than me, there is no doubt that they can win the medals for the country,” she said.

In fact, she also considers them as her main contenders for the 10-metre individual platform event.

Pandelela has also been elected team leader for Malaysia’s 11-member diving team bound for Myanmar.

Apart from Pandelela, Nur Dhabitah and Loh, the other female divers selected are Leong Mun Yee, Cheong Jun Hoong and Wendy Ng Yee.

The male national divers are Ooi Tze Liang, Muhd Amsyar Azman, Chew Yi Wei, Danial Sabri and Muhd Nazreen Abdullah.
