So near to the dam yet unreliable supply of water and electricity

SIBU: There is frequent disruption of water and power supply to 15 longhouses in Sungai Asap resettlement area in Belaga district even though they are the closest to Bakun hydroelectric dam.

Jeno Hawing and Danny Bungan said they are fed up with this predicament.

“Our district supply power to the whole state from the RM7 billion Bakun Dam yet we, the closest to the dam, are facing power disruption almost every week.

“The problem is not recent but has been going on for about two years,” they told The Borneo Post.

According to Danny, who is from Uma Belor longhouse and Belaga Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth deputy chief, their water supply fared no better.

He revealed that three persons from three different longhouses in the resettlement area passed away last week.

“Water disruption caused a big problem for the people to prepare clean food for visitors and relatives who returned to pay their last respects,” he said.

Furthermore Christmas is coming soon and it is a big celebration for the Orang Ulu in Sungai Asap.

He said most of those working in other places would return to their longhouses to celebrate with family members.

“However, this problem will make them think twice about coming back.

“We beg the authority concerned to solve this problem immediately because we do not want to have a dry Christmas this year as we did in two previous years.”
