KUALA LUMPUR: Recruiting security guards to work in the banking sector is mostly carried out by a Kuala Lumpur-based security firm which provides security services, said AmBank Group senior general manager (group corporate, communications and marketing) Syed Anuar Syed Ali.

He said most banks in the Klang Valley used security services from this particular firm whenever they needed security guards.

“We neither have the power nor are we authorised to appoint security guards…this is (solely) done by the firm.

“(Nevertheless) For the time being, we have not received any information on the guard. In fact, even we are waiting for the police to give us detailed information (on the guard),” he said when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

On Wednesday, Ambank bank officer Norazita Abu Talib, 37, was shot dead by the bank’s security guard while opening the vault at its strong room in Jalan USJ Central 2, Subang Jaya here.

The victim was shot in the face at point-blank range by the killer guard who was armed with a pump-action shotgun at 6.18pm.

The police have launched a hunt for the guard who is believed to have escaped with RM450,000 taken from the vault.

So far, the police have detained three suspects, including the guard’s wife, to facilitate investigations.

In view of the incident, Home Ministry senior deputy secretary-general (security) Datuk Alwi Ibrahim revoked the security firm’s operating licence as initial investigations revealed it had hired the guard.

Meanwhile, Security Services Association of Malaysia president Datuk Shaheen Mirza Habib said security firms should follow proper procedures when employing armed guards. — Bernama
