KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Brunei Information Department plan to introduce a training and information exchange programme on news operations and services soon.

Bernama general manager Datuk Yong Soo Heong believed the programme could be implemented in an effort to enhance bilateral cooperation between both organisations.

“Brunei Information Department is interested in learning about Bernama’s functions and structure such as the news editing system, qualification to become journalist, salary system, editorial structure, etc” he said after  briefing a delegation from Brunei Information Department led by acting director Tuan Awang Mawardi Mohammad at Wisma Bernama here yesterday.

Yong said the cooperation with Brunei Information Department include the training of officers and introducing the department in Malaysia via  advertisements and the Bernama news service.

Meanwhile, Tuan Awang Mawardi said the cooperation programme is very important in improving and restructuring Brunei’s news services to make them better.

“We learnt a few things such as the layout system for editors and journalists as well as the assignment concept which we believe will improve operations in Pelita Brunei, the official Brunei weekly newspaper.

“We believe that the system of recruitment and criteria of a journalist used by Bernama can be applied in our organisation to produce good journalists,” he added.

During the visit, the delegation checked out Bernama’s operations and services including the Editorial Department, Bernama Radio24, BernamaTV and NAM News Network (NNN). — Bernama
