12 receive Yang Di-Pertuan Agong scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, yesterday handed over the Yang di-Pertuan Agong scholarships to 12 people to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in local and overseas universities.

Six of the scholarship recipients are pursuing doctoral degrees. They are Mohd Jamil Mohd Mokhtarudin, 25, (bio-engineering in autoregulation cerebral specialisation and stroke at Oxford University) and Tan Tiong Kit, 24, (molecular biology at Oxford University);

Norshah Aizat Shuaib, 24, (mechanical engineering at University of Manchester) and Muhammad Firdaus Akbar Jalaludin Khan, 27, (electronic engineering at University of Manchester);

Ummu Tasnim Husin, 27, (mathematics at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai), and Nur Syakina Jamali, 23, (chemical engineering – biotechnology at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia).

The other six, who are pursuing master’s degrees, are Tiageswari TV Balakrishnan, 29, (software engineering at Oxford University); Leong Yin Yee, 24, (biomedical at Universiti Sains Malaysia); Ummul Khairiah Md Shahid, 24, (economy and management at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia).

Nur Hamizah Mohamad Yusoff, 22, (mechanical engineering at the University of Manchester); Ong Xin Yi, 23, (chemical and biological engineering at University College London) and Nur Syafikah Hamid, 23, (computer science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai).

The scholarships, introduced by the government in 2006 through the Public Service Department, are given to academically outstanding Malaysian citizens who have produced creative and innovative works and have secured a seat in leading universities in the country or abroad.

Public Service Department director-general    Tan   Sri  Mohamad Zabidi Zainal also attended the presentation ceremony, held at the Istana Negara. — Bernama
