Astro video production seminar an eye-opener for students

KUCHING: Students of Chung Hua Middle School No 1 got the chance to develop their creative video production skill via the Astro Ben Di Quan (BDQ) ‘BDQ Youth’ programme held here since yesterday.

In this two-day workshop conducted by renowned local filmmaker Chiu Keng Guan and prominent Astro host Siow Hui Mei, the students are taught the functional structure in a production team, basic hosting skills and editing skills.

They also learnt the know-how in developing a storyboard, types of shots, lighting, character composition as well as scriptwriting, interviewing and presenting skills.

Post production process which includes transition, subtitling and visual effects were also taught.

Chiu said in a press statement that Malaysian Chinese films and TV productions were highly appreciated by viewers in recent years.

“There is a lot of quality and rich content that can be seen in a creative way.

“It is definitely a commendable act that Astro Ben Di Quan is supporting the local creative industry and is actively developing high quality video content too,” he said.

Chiu, who is also known as Chiu Dao, is a notable Malaysian film director with close to 20 years of experience in the TV and film industry.

His filmography includes the trilogy of ‘Woohoo!’ (2010), Great Day (2011) and The Journey, which is set to be released during Chinese New Year next year.

He is recognised as the best director for Great Day at the Golden Wau Awards 2013.

Chiu studied at Saito College and Kuala Lumpur College of Art, majoring in Art Design and Fine Arts and was also a graduate in film directing from the Beijing Film Academy in China.

He first engaged in film editing and later became involved in directing TV commercials, music videos and local drama series.

Since joining Astro in 2007, Chiu has crated and produced various highly-rated TV programmes including travelogue Motosikal, game show Ready to Fly, Happy Dragon MV and the annual Chinese New Year’s eve countdown live show.

Chiu’s movie The Journey was a bold attempt that goes beyond the norm, portraying unique local Chinese lifestyles and customs with the participation of the people nationwide.
