KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president, Datuk Michael Lui Yen Sang, has expressed the hope that the state government will increase the allocation to Chinese schools by 15 per cent in the 2014 State Budget.

Lui said in view of the increase in the cost of construction materials, it is hoped that the State Government will consider increasing the annual allocation to Chinese schools.

“For us, who are involved in the development of Chinese education, we hope the State Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, will increase the allocation for Chinese schools,” he said, when asked to comment on the upcoming 2014 State Budget that will be tabled by Musa on Nov 15.

Lui continued to say that he hoped the State Government would continue to support SJK(C) Che Hwa in Kolombong, which is under the management of KKCCCI. He explained that the school is still short of RM2 million to build the infrastructure for the first phase, such as the drainage system, road, fencing and piping.

On the other hand, Lui also hoped that the State Budget for the coming year would include allocations to improve the basic infrastructure and development of the tourism industry.

“The tourism industry is booming in Kota Kinabalu, I believe he (Musa) will take that into consideration, especially pedestrian and cycling paths, hotel industry and tourism destinations,” Lui said.

He said the traffic system in Kota Kinabalu should also be improved, as well as drainage system so that the drains would not overflow during heavy rains.

Lui added that the low water pressure in Kota Kinabalu should also be addressed, as evidenced by the number of water pumps installed in many residential houses.
