KUCHING: Pilgrims returning from performing the haj and umrah should monitor their health closely in the two weeks from the date of their arrival in Sarawak for symptoms of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronovirus (MERS-CoV).

State health director Datu Dr Zulkifli Jantan said in a press release yesterday that those who are unwell or suspect an infection should seek treatment immediately at a clinic or hospital.

He said given that the majority of MERS-CoV cases confirmed so far are in Saudi Arabia, pilgrims should exercise precautions including to limit going out in public for the two weeks, wash their hands frequently, practise personal cleanliness and hygiene, and cover their mouths and noses when coughing.

Family members who come into close contact with pilgrims who have just returned to Malaysia and who have symptoms of respiratory infections are also advised to seek treatment immediately as well as inform the attending doctor about their family member’s travel history.

According to an information pamphlet issued by the Ministry of Health, the main symptoms of infection are fever, cough and breathing difficulties.

Most infected individuals will experience severe acute respiratory infections such as pneumonia. At risk are those aged 65 and above; pregnant women; individuals with chronic illnesses such as asthma, lung infections, heart disease, organ failure such as renal, diabetes, and other illnesses linked to the liver, blood and nerves; weak immune systems; and the obese.
