KOTA KINABALU: A local woman was sentenced to one year’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for cheating a salesman of RM5,000.

Deputy Registrar, Ryan Sagirann Rayner Jr, meted out the sentence on Chen Nyin Ning, 22, after she pleaded guilty to the charge yesterday.

Chen admitted to having induced the 31-year-old victim into giving her RM5,000 as a loan by using a falsified business premises license, sometime in July this year at Beverley Hills, Penampang.

The offence stipulated under Section 420 of the Penal Code provides for ten years imprisonment, and whipping, and liable to fine, on conviction.

According to the facts of case, the accused reportedly met the victim sometime at the end of June this year and gave him a copy of her MyKad and a business license for a premises, Hobby Kingdom Enterprise, in which her name had been listed.

The accused also reportedly passed on five cheques to the victim as assurance that she would pay back the RM5,000 loaned from the victim.

The victim, upon realising that Chen cannot be contacted, found out that the copy of the business premises license that he received from the accused was a fake after he went to Hobby Kingdom Enterprise to enquire.

Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted in the case.
