KUCHING: A man perished while his wife and sister-in-law escaped unhurt after a pick-up on the opposite side of the road went out of control and slammed into their car yesterday.

The deceased has been identified by police as 60-year-old Wan Suib Wan Long of Jalan Depot in Petra Jaya.

The fatal accident occurred around 7am along Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub when the Toyota Hilux driven by a 28-year-old man veered out of control and went over the road divider before crashing into the Perodua Kelisa driven by Wan Suib, killing him instantly.

His wife and sister-in-law, who were seated in the front and rear passenger seats respectively, escaped unhurt.

At the time of the incident, the three of them were said to be heading to the Kuching International Airport to send off a relative who was about to leave for further studies in Yemen.

Fire and Rescue Services Department personnel were summoned to the scene to extricate Wan Suib’s body from the wrecked Kelisa, while traffic police personnel were on hand to conduct investigation.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad revealed that initial investigation found that the fatal accident was a result of negligence on the part of the Hilux driver, who was also unhurt.

He added that investigations are ongoing and that police have classified the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
